Easy aromatherapy methods at home.
We know that a scent can be more than a pleasant experience.
If you’re feeling stressed out or tired, scents, like lavender, can help to lift your mood and feel calmer and more energized.
When you use scents to improve your health or mood, you’re using aromatherapy.
How aromatherapy uses essential oils
In aromatherapy, essential oils that are distilled from plants are absorbed into the body, either through the pores of the skin during massage, or by inhalation through the nose.
The scents released by the oil act on the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that influences the hormonal system.
Individual responses to scents are highly personal, but we all know that a scent can affect your mood, metabolism, stress levels, and libido.
We can see the power of aromatherapy in our sense of smell’s ability to bring forth vivid memory.
That is why essential oils can help support a better mood and positively affect the body and mind.
Make it work for you by choosing the right oils
For instance, aromatherapy researchers have demonstrated that specifically lavender, can improve mood and lessen anxiety.
You can bring that lesson home by using aromatherapy around your house and create fragrant “stress relievers” in your own space, and provide the kind of mood you’re looking for.
Different scents can have varying effects from energizing to soothing.
If you’re feeling pretty tired and low in mood, try one of the citruses, like grapefruit or orange.
Rosemary can help you increase concentration, stimulate cognitive abilities and lessen mental fatigue.
It’s easy to enjoy
Aromatherapy is an affordable and natural approach you can use at home in several ways:
Place essential oils in an infuser and fill a room with a scent.
Put a few drops of essential oil in about 2 cups of water. Stir the water, then dip in a cotton washcloth. Wring out the cloth and use it to wipe your face, hands, and neck. Three drops of essential oil are plenty.
You can store the cloth in a sealed container in the refrigerator for later use.
Try to simply apply to your skin a lotion that uses a scent you find beneficial.
Incorporate calming essential oils into a self-massage.
Applying essential oils topically with massage can be effective on multiple levels.
You’ll inhale them, your skin may absorb some of the oils, and the massage itself may enhance the effects of the oils. Be sure to combine them with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil first, since high concentrations of essential oils can irritate the skin.
Carry a roll-on (a mix of carrier oil and essential oil/s) in your purse or pocket, or just add your oils to a cotton ball and sniff as needed during the day.
